The new wonder drugs were accompanied by an intensive, self-administered treatment regimen.&nbsp;
Would patients comply?&nbsp;
Compliance with treatment regimens is a challenge for the healthcare industry, with medication non-adherence affecting as many as 40%–50% of patients and causing an estimated 125,000 deaths each year. All avoidable.
With lives at stake, our client in the pharmaceutical industry asked our Design Insights and Strategy team to research solutions and devise&nbsp;a care model that would motivate patients with hepatitis C to complete the regimen successfully.

<h2>Fixing Medication Compliance</h2>
We traveled the country to conduct original ethnographic research to better understand the needs of this very specific patient.&nbsp;
From this research came a pivotal insight—many patients with hepatitis C had also received treatment for human immunodeficiency virus. 
We learned that, in comparison, the hepatitis C treatment felt easy compared to HIV treatment. 
These patients already beat one previously fatal disease, and it made them more motivated to stomp another one.&nbsp;

Their enthusiasm was inspiring.
The care model we devised for our client increased adherence and added value to patients by amplifying that enthusiasm to all&nbsp;patients.&nbsp;
The care model&nbsp;celebrated patient empowerment, empathized with their co-morbidities, and provided the support they needed to comply with their complex daily treatment regimen.
