<p>In 2022, Delve published an <a href="https://www.delve.com/five-reasons-why-companies-fail-to-innovate" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">original research report</a> that identified the nine failure modes that stifle a company's ability to innovate, of which five were found to be particularly impactful.  </p>
<p>Of the companies we surveyed, all face at least one failure mode and many face three or more failure modes at once.  <br> <br>What sets the most innovative companies apart from the least is how they proactively, consistently, and rigorously manage their failure modes.</p>

<p>You find yourself thinking or even saying out loud things like, “We have a lot of ideas, but they don’t seem to end up going anywhere.” If you’re noticing this or hearing feedback like it from your colleagues, that’s a signal that there might be something standing in the way of your best ideas progressing into something valuable for your organization.</p><h3>Work Moves Forward Too Slowly</h3>
<p>Do you feel like your organization is moving more slowly in general than you would like? This is sometimes called organizational inertia. Maybe your company has grown or is already a larger, more mature organization and as a result, it moves a lot more slowly than it would like to, especially relative to faster-moving competitors. If you recognize these signs in your organization, Innovation Enablement is a great way to try to unlock the speed and progress you’re looking for.</p><h3>It’s Time to Take the Lead in Your Industry</h3>
<p>Some clients come to us when they are ready to transition their organizational or brand identity from, say, being a fast follower to being an industry pioneer. <p>We have spent the better part of two years developing, validating, and refining Delve’s Innovation Enablement framework, which highlights the ingredients whose presence or absence in a given organization tends to either enable or stifle innovation.  <br> <br>Having the right innovation ingredients in place is the key to positioning your organization to be able to spot and capitalize on new opportunities in your industry—and the first step is to assess what is working or not working right now<br></p>

<h3>At the Organization Level</h3>
<p>At the organization level, the ingredients we look for in our assessment are related to healthy organizational processes. How does information flow through the organization? Is there a unifying vision and purpose for the company? Does everyone throughout the organization understand why innovation matters and what innovation is fundamentally in service to?</p><h3>At the Team Level</h3>
<p>At the team level, we look for team attributes and project-level conditions that facilitate innovative work. This assessment is a great way to identify not just what's not working, but also what's working. If we find that certain teams that are particularly prolific and doing particularly innovative work, we can investigate what those teams might be doing differently and tell a client, okay, we need to lean more into whatever these teams are doing.</p>
<h3>At the Individual Level</h3>
<p>The skills, behaviors, and attitudes that enable innovation will vary from person to person. Assessing these at the individual level really helps us understand the incredible range of assets that a company has for innovation and how we might unlock those individual talents and competencies. At this level, the ingredients we’re looking for include not just specific skills but also broader mindsets and attitudes like comfort with ambiguity and resourcefulness.</p>

<h2>A Deep Dive into How Innovation Works (or Doesn’t Currently Work) Within Your Organization</h2>
<p>The truth is, there's no one answer to what an innovation culture looks like. There's no one answer to how innovation should operate inside an organization. So, our goal is to be sensitive to what a particular organization needs and what works inside that organization, then develop a custom approach to innovation enablement within that context.</p>
<p>Our assessment gives us an understanding of where the highest value interventions are likely to be. We identify where the highest value work to be done is, where potentially a low to medium effort or change could have a medium to high effect on an organization's innovation results and outcomes, and then we target those areas. This step involves leveraging all Delve’s multidisciplinary innovation expertise in strategy, design, engineering, and research to shift the ingredients of innovation we’ve identified, addressing weaknesses and deepening existing strengths.<br></p>
