On October 10, 2024, Delve’s Philadelphia studio <a href="https://www.delve.com/news/delve-to-host-jeffsolves-medtech-pitch-night-at-philadelphia-studio" target="_blank">hosted the JeffSolves MedTech Pitch Night</a> as part of the annual Design Philadelphia festival. Under the theme "Co-designing the future of healthcare," two teams of Thomas Jefferson University students presented innovative healthcare solutions they had been developing for the past year.

<a href="https://www.healthdesignlab.com/jeffsolves" target="_blank">The JeffSolves program</a> emphasizes that true innovation in medtech begins with empathy. Instead of focusing on technology first, students work directly with users and&nbsp;are guided by mentors, including experts from Delve, to deeply understand and address real-world needs. Over the past year, the students have&nbsp;gained invaluable&nbsp;hands-on experience using a human-centered approach to tackle complex healthcare challenges.&nbsp;

<h3>Heel Up: A Modified Crutch with a Built-In Elevation System</h3>
The first student team to present&nbsp;tackled a common issue faced by patients with lower leg injuries. Each year, 141 million emergency room visits occur in the U.S., and 15% involve lower leg injuries that require crutches for recovery. A significant challenge for these patients is painful swelling, which can be alleviated by elevating the leg—a difficult task when outside the home.

The team's solution, the "Heel Up," is an innovative crutch with a fold-out leg rest built into its frame. The design allows users to elevate their leg conveniently and efficiently, wherever they are, by transforming the crutch into a leg elevation platform and back again. This space-saving solution ensures that patients always have the necessary tool at hand, addressing their needs throughout the recovery journey.

<h3>Commodore Bedside Commode: A Solution for Safety, Comfort, and Dignity</h3>
The second team introduced the "Commodore," a bedside commode designed to provide improved stability, accessibility, comfort, and dignity for individuals with mobility challenges, particularly those who must use a commode for the long term due to a traumatic injury like an above-the-knee amputation. 
Their research revealed that existing bedside commodes fall short in six key areas: stability, accessibility, comfort, wiping, maintenance, and aesthetics. Users reported feeling unsafe, uncomfortable, and undignified using traditional designs.&nbsp;

The students decided that “good enough is no longer enough,” and developed the Commodore to address all these shortcomings.
The result is a commode that users described as a game-changer. Its features include enhanced stability, easy accessibility for wheelchair users, ergonomic design to prevent skin pinching, improved wiping access, and a simplified maintenance system. One occupational therapist noted, "It solves so many issues I've seen patients have with their commodes," while users praised it as a product they would buy themselves.
