Color, Light . . . Lovely
Seeking to add the ambient glow of light-emitting diode (LED) lighting to its signature TIKI® torch products, Lamplight engaged their offshore manufacturer to engineer a new line of products.
The challenge for Lamplight? While they are experts in oil-burning lamps, they needed to know more about the technicalities and possibilities of LED lighting.
There are many things to consider when incorporating LED light into a product — brightness, use environment, and purpose (illumination, indication or aesthetics). In addition, proper design involves more than the selection of the LED light source; it’s a system that needs a driver, controls and an energy source.
Lamplight asked our Electrical Engineering team to evaluate the engineering and workmanship of the prototype glowing torch. Our team identified several areas for improvement including certain manufacturing quality checks and design recommendations.
Since LEDs have many advantages over incandescent light sources including lower energy consumption, longer lifetime, improved physical robustness, smaller size and faster switching, Lamplight felt that it was worth the investment to fully leverage the possibilities of LED hardware.
In this spirit, we created a half-day “LED 101” seminar for Lamplight’s quality, engineering, marketing and sales staff. During the session, we shared what to look for when critiquing an LED design and the specifications that manufacturers need to produce desired colors and effects.
Lamplight was particularly interested in the color mixing potential of LED technology.
To empower exploration, our team created a testing mechanism that operates much like a player piano.
- Instead of a roll of perforated paper that directs the movement of piano keys, our mechanism consisted of a computer program that “talks to” a lighting unit.
- Through a user-friendly computer interface, Lamplight played with color and light sequences.
- When they hit upon a color profile they liked, they could easily save it in an Excel spreadsheet.
Once they selected a color mix, the spreadsheet contained all the information the manufacturer needed.
The result of this collaboration is the soft, relaxing interplay of colors that makes TIKI Brand Glowing Torches unique.
An exciting expansion of Lamplight’s product line, they open up a whole new world of outdoor lighting possibilities.
