Learn & Plan
A pioneer in autonomous marine navigation, Sea Machines brought in our team to collaborate on the design of its computer-aided vision offering, AI-ris. As captains monitor their AI-guided vessel while underway, Sea Machines needed an interface to help establish trust among these operators that the computer was making prudent navigation decisions while also enhancing captains’ ability to identify and respond to potential obstacles in the sea around them.

Concept & Test
Following a crash course in Sea Machine’s product requirements, how captains plan and manage journeys, as well as taking our primer in marine navigation, we concepted and tested a new interface that leveraged all of Sea Machine’s breakthrough technology. We enhanced captains’ vision and decision-making capability through augmented reality layers on a 360-degree on-board camera feed and navigation charts. We simplified vessel operation with an intuitive control interface, focused on the few common interventions a captain would make while underway. Through concept testing and refinement, we further simplified the experience to make the AI-ris interface a welcome addition to the technology captains rely on.
"They were patient and flexible, both of which are important when dealing with a startup."
Design & Deliver
We then translated the Sea Machine’s brand look and feel into a future-forward, dynamic interface design. Designing for marine multi-function displays in high glare and low visibility scenarios, while considering the limitations of a touch interface on a rolling, choppy ship’s bridge, our team took accessibility design to another level. Collaborating with Sea Machine’s development and testing teams through launch, we were able to prepare AI-ris for any scenario the sea might throw at it.
