Biomeme, a startup with a strong history of innovation in the field of molecular detection, accepted the challenge. Their newest offering, the Franklin, is a fully portable thermocycler capable of real-time PCR, RT-PCR, qPCR and isothermal analysis, the gold standard in molecular detection technology. 
Thermocyclers are essential tools in molecular biology and genetics research, as well as in clinical diagnostics, forensic analysis, and various other fields where amplification of DNA is necessary.

The innovative Franklin Thermocycler stands out in this product category for its unique balance of its high performance, ease of use, and rugged, ultra-portable design: 
<ul><li>Ultra-portability. The size of a Bluetooth speaker, weighing only 2.65 pounds, and battery operated for maximum mobility, the Franklin allows scientists and researchers to conduct a full day of research in the field on a single charge.&nbsp;</li><li>Unique throughput. The Franklin enables Multiplex real-time detection of up to 27 targets from 1 sample. It can simultaneously test 3 samples for up to 9 targets each, or 9 samples for up to 3 targets each.</li><li>Fast, real-time results. In less than one hour, the Franklin can determine the presence or absence of targets in a sample.&nbsp;</li></ul>
In short, the Franklin Thermocycler performs to the standard of most advanced labs, without requiring any lab equipment or special experience to use—so users can now take their lab with them, anywhere.&nbsp;

Biomeme partnered with Delve to develop the Franklin Thermocycler. Together, the Delve and Biomeme teams worked to optimize the Franklin with industrial design and mechanical engineering—all within a very tight prototyping and production timeframe.
When they approached Delve, the Biomeme team had already built a capable engineering team around their core technology for the Franklin, but not an industrial design team. They needed Delve’s help to “skin” the product. Biomeme asked Delve to develop aesthetics for the device that would position the Franklin more broadly—for medical and consumer users, in addition to the military users for which the device had originally been conceptualized.

Starting with a working proof of concept, the Delve industrial design team envisaged and developed the Franiklin’s integrated device aesthetics. Multiple concepts were explored, downselected, refined, and developed. Ultimately, as the Biomeme project lead put it, Delve’s design work “gave ugly bricks of technology an elegant form.”&nbsp;

As a mobile, high-performance diagnostics device, the Franklin’s device aesthetics are driven primarily by functionality. Its shape is minimal and boxy, but softened, with some crisp geometries. It looks rugged but approachable, and has a cool, technical look. It can be colored lighter or darker. The balance of neutral and tech in its appearance allows the Franklin Thermocycler to live comfortably across multiple markets: military, medical, and consumer.

Delve also augmented Biomeme’s technical team with electromechanical design, soft goods design, prototyping, testing, DFM, CFD, thermal analysis, vendor sourcing, and production liaison. 
The resulting device is an exemplar of user-friendliness for a wide range of users. When paired wirelessly with Biomeme Go, an intuitive smartphone app, the Franklin Thermoclycer makes it easy to run, monitor, analyze, and share PCR data, regardless of the user’s level of PCR expertise.
