Functional modeling can help product teams reduce risk, clarify system requirements, and accelerate development. On Wednesday, April 30, Delve will host an in-person event at our Madison studio focused on how functional modeling techniques can improve product outcomes. The meetup will offer practical guidance, real-world case studies, and opportunities to connect with fellow innovators working at the intersection of complex systems and product design.
Attendees will gain cross-sector insights from academia, industry, and consulting on how to apply functional modeling to unlock smarter product development. Through practical strategies and proven examples, the event will highlight tools to reduce risk, improve collaboration, and support faster, more confident decision-making.
 
The agenda includes three presentations: 
<ul><li>From Diagrams to Decisions: The Role of Functional Modeling <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/katherinefu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Kate Fu</a>, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, will present on hierarchical and black box modeling techniques. Her session will highlight how functional modeling supports early-stage decision-making, clarifies system behavior, and strengthens cross-functional alignment. </li></ul>
<ul><li>Lessons from Sub-Zero’s Product Development Transformation <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/jlclark124/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jessica Clark,</a> Requirements Engineer at Sub-Zero Group, will share lessons learned from the company’s recent transformation of its product development process. Her talk will explore how Sub-Zero implemented formal requirements management and functional modeling to improve structure, efficiency, and traceability. </li></ul>
<ul><li>Applying Functional Modeling for Smarter Product Development <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/rebeccaspatholt/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Rebecca Spatholt</a>, Principal Systems Engineer at Delve, will present case examples of how functional modeling is used to derisk innovation efforts, adapt to diverse project needs, and improve product outcomes. </li></ul>
Following the talks, attendees are invited to stay for a networking happy hour with members of Madison’s R&D, engineering, and product innovation community.
